At Decatur First, we believe children are a critical part of the church family and we love to see them in worship with their families. We love to nurture their relationship with God through engaging, age-appropriate Sunday morning programs.
Summer Sunday School
Children’s Sunday School is offered at 9:45am every Sunday this summer but with a relaxed feel and plenty of movement! Of course, our nursery is open all summer too!
- Two year olds report to Room 106 for regular lessons.
- 3s, 4s and rising Kindergarteners report to room 110 for “Songs of the Spirit,” a music and movement-based curriculum led by music educator Sarah Pentzer. Each Sunday the kids will learn about a different “Fruit of the Spirit” and a follower of Jesus who exemplifies that “fruit” such as joy, peace and gentleness.
- Rising 1st–6th graders will participate in Bible Olympics in the Fellowship Hall led by Tracy Frost. Using team relay games and races, our elementary kids will learn about a different follower of Jesus each Sunday. Athletic gear, shorts and tennis shoes are encouraged!
Please consider pitching in one or more Sundays this summer to assist Tracy or Sarah.
Very little prep is involved and you don’t even need to be in charge of anything!
NURSERY // 8:30AM - 12PM
Our nursery is offered every Sunday for children infants through age four in the main building on the first floor: 8:30am - 12:30 pm We have paid nursery staff who stand ready to welcome and love your child. Background checks are performed on every staff member and they are CPR trained. All nursery workers and volunteers abide by safe sanctuary guidelines.
SUNDAY SCHOOL // 9:45 - 10:45AM
Our Sunday school programs for children have elements that include storytelling, art, music and games for building community among the children. Each age group has a slightly different format:
2 YEAR OLDS (ROOM 106 - CORNER ROOM)
Hear a simple Bible story and complete a simple craft, guided by loving teachers and staff.
GODLY PLAY // 3 & 4-YEAR-OLDS (ROOM 110)
Godly Play is a Montessori-based approach to religious education, which nurtures a child's innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through storytelling, artistic response to the story and caring for their classroom community.
GODLY PLAY // KINDERGARTEN (ROOM 305)
Godly Play is a Montessori-based approach to religious education, which nurtures a child's innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps children to explore their faith through storytelling, artistic response to the story and caring for their classroom community. In the Kindergarten Godly Play class, children expand upon the core stories introduced in the 3 & 4 year old class.
1st - 3RD GRADE (3rd Floor)
Children 1st - 3rd Grade participate in a small group/large group experience, which begins in their individual classrooms with arrival activities and an introduction to the story for the day. These grades come together for "large group," which includes singing with live acoustic accompaniment, an offering collection for missions and a story told by our Godly Play storytellers. Children then return to their age-based classroom for artwork, games and further exploration of the story.
4th & 5th GRADE (TRAIL MIX - GYM ROOM #3)
Our 4th and 5th Grade ministry emphasizes friendship and fellowship among the preteens in our church family. Their Sunday morning experience includes a light breakfast, social time or ping-pong, followed by a Bible lesson, which emphasizes situations the children may encounter at school or home. 4th and 5th graders also participate in monthly social outings such as bowling or rock climbing, as well as service projects such as sorting medical supplies at MedShare.
CHILDREN in WORSHIP
We encourage your child to worship with you at any of our worship services. We welcome noise and fidgeting. We are here to support your family as you worship together. Children often participate in elements of worship as scripture readers, call to worship leaders and acolytes. Families who prefer childcare are welcome to use our nursery on the first floor of the main building (infants - age four) any time between 8:30am and 12:30 pm.
