The Beginning of the Story:

In February of 2022, the congregation of Avondale Pattillo made the brave and faithful decision to close its doors. The membership voted to give the property to Decatur First UMC, with the idea that ministry and mission would continue in this space. Decatur First gratefully accepted this generous gift, and has begun the process of discerning God's call for the use of this property.

In the Fall of 2022, a visioning team, led by Andy Yates and Rev. Laura Rappold, was formed and began meeting. The team meets regularly and is in the process of prayerful discernment about our next steps.

FAQs:

What is happening with the property?

Decatur First has put together a Visioning Team, led by Andy Yates. The team has been meeting regularly and is working to discern the best use for the property. We are moving toward proposals to share with the church council and the congregation. We anticipate having specifics to share with the congregation about potential options later this year.

How does this project affect the Decatur First operating budget??

When DFUMC voted to accept the gift of the property, we also accepted the parsonage, which was located in Avondale Estates. We sold the parsonage at the beginning of the process, and the proceeds from that sale have allowed us to maintain the expenses at the church campus and will continue to do so. We also received a BEAT grant from the North Georgia Conference to support the Associate Pastor of Mission’s compensation package. The Avondale Pattillo campus is not currently supported by Decatur First’s operational budget (your tithes and offerings). We have received sufficient funding through August of 2025 to fully fund the campus and the Associate Pastor of Mission’s compensation package without using DFUMC operating funds.
