Curriculum

We believe the early years of school should be a time for creative play and learning. At Decatur First Preschool, we use SMART Box Early Learning Experiences to enhance learning. This program is based on developmentally appropriate learning experiences focusing on all areas of child development: cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual. 

STEM ENRICHMENT

We are excited about our new STEM program. This interactive classroom will house our music and science classes. In our STEM room, children will focus on cooperation and cognitive skills.

Science: Our teachers use hands-on activities and experiences to promote critical thinking and exploration. Our science units expose children at an early age to the amazing and fun world of science. Our 1- and 2-year-old classes will visit monthly. Our 3- and 4-year-old classes will visit weekly.

Music: Singing, rhythm, instruments and creative movement develop music appreciation as well as dramatic interpretation. All children will attend music weekly.

Baby sign language

Our 1 and 2 year old age groups receive weekly Sign Language instruction. Children will get learn to use basic signs to communicate, as their verbal skills develop.

SPANISH

Our 3 and 4 year old age groups receive weekly Spanish instruction. Our Spanish classes use play, games, and songs to allow children to experience the Spanish language and culture.

FIELD TRIPS

This year, we will host in-house field trips. Upcoming in-house field trips include the Children’s Museum of Atlanta plus more! Be on the lookout for this information in Tall Tales, our weekly newsletter.

CHAPEL

Chapel is held Wednesdays for children in the 3- and 4-year-old classes. Both classroom teachers will accompany their class. Chapel time consists of singing two or three chapel songs led by the music teachers.  The children pray the Lord’s Prayer led by the Director.  Then, one of the ministers on our church staff conducts a short children’s worship experience.  Birthdays from the past week are celebrated at the close of Chapel. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to attend.

TODDLER TIME

Our Director will host Bible Stories for children in the 1- and 2-year-old classes monthly. During this time, the children will participate in a short worship experience including songs and stories.
