Communion for the Homebound

“Christ our Lord invites to His table all who love Him...”
These words mean so much to many, who are no longer able to physically attend church.

Would you like to deliver Holy Communion to homebound members?

We are looking for people to serve Communion on the Sundays of each month when we celebrate the sacrament at Decatur First.

Our Commitment:
Our intent is to make Communion available to those unable to attend church due to injury, illness, advanced age, or other circumstance.

Do you think only pastors can serve Communion?
Not so. Our United Methodist Discipline provides for laity to assist in the sharing of bread and cup—a celebration of the whole church. Everything you need will be provided along with instructions and encouragement.

What We Do:
We are asking our congregation for help in delivering Communion to persons who are homebound, hospitalized or in nursing homes/assisted living facilities.

How it Works:
Requests for Communion at home or in a nursing home/assisted living facility will be assigned. The “prepared” Communion box will be placed on the credence table during worship. After worship, you will pick-up your visitation card and communion box. Your visit will include praying, distributing Holy Communion, and offering a blessing. (ALL of this will be provided, and the text will be on a card for you.)

“If our homebound members are unable to come to church, let’s take the church to them.”

One way of taking church to the homebound is through volunteer Communion stewards who deliver both the sacrament and a sense of community to those who are confined to their homes. The homebound need to have fellowship brought to them. They miss their friends and the fellowship of other church members. By receiving Communion from volunteers who visit their homes, the homebound church members develop new friendships and meaningful connections. Bringing together the sacrament and all our Decatur community is part of what make Communion Holy.
