Welcome from Rev. Blair

Welcome! If you are checking us out for the first time, we are glad you are here. It's challenging to capture and convey everything I love about this church, but I'll try to give you some highlights:

1) This church seeks to be transformational. We take seriously the call to discipleship for people of all ages: children, youth, young adults, middle aged folks, and older adults. With intentional conversation and prayer, we continually strive to engage in creative ways to connect with God and our community.

2) This church is brave. We have a track record of making hard decisions with integrity and with an eye toward building God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

3) This church is kind. There are little placards over doorways throughout our building that read, "Through these doors pass people who care." Truly, this is a church that shares the love of Christ through faithful prayers, meals, prayer shawls, grief support groups, and home visits with holy communion and conversation. These are just a few examples of the holy ways in which this congregation cares for one another and our neighbors.

4) This church is engaged. We continue to learn and work in advocacy, our long term partners include DCM, DEAM, and Wellroot. In honor of our late congressman, John Lewis, we established a scholarship at Georgia State University through the African American Male Initiative, "My Brother's Keeper." We are excited to begin a new partnership with Urban Recipe in 2024!

Sundays

You are cordially invited to come in and check us out! Some folks wear a coat and tie, some folks wear flip flops, so far no one has come in a coat and tie and flip flops, but if that's your thing, there's a place for you here!

There are four entrances into our building. If you need handicapped accessibility, use the North Candler or the back parking lot entrance off of Commerce. Finally, if you still have questions before coming to check us out, please send me an email- bsetnor@decaturfirst.org.

A few additional pieces of info:

  1. No matter which door you come through, you will need to walk and navigate a bit to find the sanctuary. If you will look up there are signs to try to help, but also there are greeters to help guide you.

  2. Services are at 9am & 11am in the Sanctuary- they are casual, and you can sit wherever you want, of course.

  3. Coffee is available in the Narthex (the little room off of the sanctuary) and you are welcome to bring it into worship with you.

  4. Childcare for children four years and younger is available throughout Sunday mornings on the first floor from 8:45am-12:15pm, but for kids 4 and older we recommend Sunday School and then attending worship!

  5. The Sunday School hour is 9:50-10:45am. Childrens/youth classes can be found by clicking below, but we send all new adults to the same place- the Landing Place.

The Landing Place meets each week to cover some basics of faith - digging into scripture, prayer, and what it means to live what we believe as United Methodists. This is a great place to meet and get to know Janice (our Adult Ministries Director), who can help you “plug in-” find a class, volunteer, whatever you are interested in doing.
